Young Guns Victorious at Elders' Cup

PICTURED ABOVE: John Irwin (l) presenting Elders' Cup to Trevor Giggey

(Antigonish, NS) October 18, 2009 - A birdie by team captain Trevor Giggey, on the final hole, in the final match of the day, lifted the Young Guns to victory in the 8th Annual CPGA Atlantic Elders’ Cup, contested 17-18 October at Antigonish Golf & CC.

In the final match Giggey was one down to Greg Sutherland, of the Old Guys, coming to the eighteenth hole. A win by Sutherland and the matches would have been all square, at 14 points each, and the defending Old Guys would have retained the cup; but, Giggey’s second shot to within five feet and resulting birdie changed all that. Their match ended all square and the Young Guns once again had the cup, with a final winning tally of 14 ˝ to 13 ˝.

It was fitting that the winning stroke was made by Giggey, the current Zone Champion and Tour Champion and top player on the CPGA Atlantic Tour this past season.

The modified Ryder Cup team competition pitted 14 CPGA Atlantic professionals, 34 years and younger (Young Guns) against 14 of their fellow professionals who are 35 years and older (Old Guys). The selection of teams was based on...(October, 2009, Results) More...

The Moncton Golf & CC head professional rolled in three birdies on his final six holes to best the 25 man field of CPGA Atlantic golf professionals at the wonderfully conditioned, 6,450 yard, par 71 Amherst, NS layout.

In second place was John Irwin from Miscouche, PEI with 75.

Tied for third were Adam Chamberlain, Gowan Brae; Jeff Wood, Lakeside; Elliott Isenor, Fox Harb’r; Steve LeBlanc, Westfield and Steve Toombs, Mactaquac.

“It was a bit of an up and down day, but I was lucky to roll in a few birdies, which made the difference,” related Howe following his win. “The greens were slick, so you had to be careful, but the course was in great condition.”

The Callaway Cup is a series of five one day events, within the CPGA Atlantic Tour. Players were awarded points at each event, based on their placing. The overall winner of the Callaway Cup Series was John Irwin...(September, 2009, Results) More...

(Moncton, NB) September 13, 2009 - Trevor Giggey continued his strong play this season with a three shot victory at the CPGA Atlantic Tour Championship held at Moncton Golf & CC.

Giggey of Fox Meadow Golf Club in Stratford, PEI took control of the tournament with an opening round 66, then followed up with a 67 for a 133 total over the 6,200 yard, par 70, Riverview, NB layout.

Runner-up was Scott Frizzell of the Links of Montague, Dartmouth, NS whose total of 136 included a tournament low round of 65 on Sunday.

Giggey, sporting a three shot lead heading into the final round, made birdie on the first hole and finished the front nine at 6 under par for the tournament. “I made another birdie on ten to get to seven under, but soon ran into trouble with bogies on 11 and 12,” he related, “but, I was able to steady the ship, made an eagle on the par-5 fifteenth and parred my way in. Except for 11 and 12 my game was solid all weekend.”

The annual event, played September 12-13, sponsored by Ganong and presented by TaylorMade – adidas attracted 41 CPGA professionals from throughout Atlantic Canada.

Tied for third in the pro division were Stu Musgrave of Moncton and Kevin Dugas of Links of Montague who each shot 138.

(Dartmouth, NS) August 31, 2009 - Mike Machel burned up the back nine, with three birdies and an eagle to post a four point victory at the Callaway Cup event played at Brightwood on August 31.

Machel, a teaching professional with Awareness Golf in Halifax, NS, recorded a total of 20 points in the modified Stableford competition, which attracted 28 Canadian PGA Atlantic golf professionals to compete at the 5,600 yard, par 68, Dartmouth, NS. layout.

Tied for second spot, with 16 points, were John Irwin of Mischouche, PEI; Kevin Dugas of The Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS; and Andrew Isenor of Golf Town, Dartmouth, NS.

Dugas Captures CPGA Atlantic Assistant Professionals’ Championship

PICTURED ABOVE: Kevin Dugas (center), Greg Sutherland (l), CPGA Atlantic vice captain and event sponsor, Troy Henneberry (r) of Fletcher Leisure Group

(Truro, NS) August 18, 2009 - Kevin Dugas closed with an even par, final round 71 to overcome a three shot deficit and win the CPGA Atlantic Assistant Professionals’ Championship, sponsored by Fletcher Leisure Group.

Dugas, of the Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS, had an opening day 74, and totalled 145 for a winning margin of four strokes at the annual event, played at Truro Golf Club.

First round leader Sean Joyce, of the Canadian Golf Academy, and Mike Archibald, of Amherst Golf Club, tied for second at 149. Joyce had rounds of 71-78 and Archibald recorded 77-72.

Justin Dawson of Green Gables was fourth at 150. Steve LeBlanc of Westfield Golf & CC and Jason Stagg of the Canadian Golf Academy tied for fifth at 154.

Twenty-nine Atlantic professionals contested the annual championship at the 6,300 yard, par 71, well conditioned Truro, NS layout on 17-18 August.

On the opening hole of the second round, Joyce got into trouble, Dugas made birdie and took the lead. At the turn Dugas lead by six, but a late rally by Joyce, reduced the margin to two shots, after 17 holes. A long well positioned drive by Dugas on the 384 yard, par 4, finishing hole left him with a short approach shot which he holed for eagle two and a four shot victory.

“I felt that I hit it really good the past couple of days,” reported Dugas. “I was just very uncomfortable on the greens. I didn’t feel that I stroked it badly, I just couldn’t seem to read...(August, 2009, Results) More...
