Anthony Warren Captures CPGA Atlantic Championship
Dugas runner-up
Anthony
Warren, assistant professional from Summerside Golf Club, won the 2005 Titleist
FootJoy CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship, on his first try, with two great rounds
of 69. His six-under par total of 138 gave him a four shot margin over defending
champion Kevin Dugas, of Clare Golf & CC, who recorded rounds of 71-71=142.
Fifty three CPGA professionals, from throughout Atlantic
Canada, participated in the annual event, over the challenging 7,000 yard, par
72, Lynx at Kingswood in Fredericton, NB, on 6-7 July. Brian Stewart of
Fredericton Golf & CC was third at 143 and Jeff Wood of Moncton Golf & CC was
fourth at 146. John Irwin was low senior at 150.
The final round began with Warren leading Dugas by two shots,
but soon a roller coaster battle developed between the two players. Warren
extended the margin to four by the tenth hole, where he chipped in for eagle 3 ,
while Dugas settled for birdie four. Dugas quickly rallied, with birdies on 11
and 12, while Warren scored bogey – par and the margin was reduced to one.
Warren birdied the 13th and bogeyed the 15,th while Dugas continued with pars.
Warren’s
drive on the short par 5, 16th found a fairway bunker while Dugas hit the
fairway, but a solid iron shot from the trap, by Warren, found the front fringe
of the green. Dugas’s second rolled into the back greenside bunker, but he made
a great sand save for birdie while Warren two putted for birdie.
Both players then two putted the long par three 17th for pars.
With Warren still leading by one, they made their way to the
443 yard, par four finishing hole. Both Dugas and Warren’s drives found the
short rough, but Warren reached the green in regulation, while Dugas missed to
the right. Leaving his pitch short of the green, Dugas needed four more to
finish, while Warren two putted for victory.
