(Moncton, N.B.) September 10, 2006
- Gordie Smith casually rolled in a fifteen foot birdie putt on the
final hole for a closing round of 68 to win the CPGA Atlantic Tour
Championship, played 9-10 September at the Moncton Golf Club. Adding to
an opening round 67, the five under par total of 135 gave the Oakfield
Golf & CC professional a two stroke edge over runner-up Kevin Dugas of
Carman Creek. Dugas counted 137 on rounds of 69-68.
Third in the professional division was Trevor Giggey
of Fox Meadow 67-72--139. John Lawson of Country Meadows was fourth
68-72--140 and host professional Stu Musgrave was fifth at 141 on rounds
of 67-74.
Ken Comeau of Moncton took low amateur honors with
70-67=137.
Sponsored by Ganong and presented by Wilson Sports,
the annual Tour Championship is the fifth event on the CPGA Atlantic
Tour 2006 and attracted 47 professionals from throughout Atlantic
Canada. From the generosity and hard work of the sponsors, volunteers
and participants of this popular event, $25,000 was donated for Breast
Cancer Research.
In recording his victory, Smith put an end to a couple
of streaks. Dugas had previously won the first four Tour events in 2006
and Musgrave had won the Tour Championship the past four years.
