| Kevin Dugas - CPGA Atlantic Tour Champion
2007 |
(Moncton, NB) September 9, 2007
- Kevin Dugas played solid golf all weekend, then turned it up a notch,
on the back nine Sunday, to capture the CPGA Atlantic Tour Championship
by 4 strokes.
The veteran professional from Carman Creek Golf
Course, in Fredericton, NB, closed with a back nine 33 for a total
of 35-33=68. Paired with an opening 66, his two-day total of 134, was
six under par for two trips around the challenging 6,260-yard, par 70,
Moncton Golf & CC layout.
Gordie Smith of Oakfield Golf & CC in Grand Lake, NS
was next with 138 on rounds of 70-68.
Host professional Stu Musgrave finished in third place
with 69-71=140
Michel Landry of Lynx at Kingswood, in Fredericton, NB
was low amateur with a 138 total, including a sizzling opening round of
63.
Dugas admitted that he didn’t get off to a good start
in Sunday’s final round. “ I didn’t feel a hundred percent today, just
lazy and not really sharp. I found the greens tough to figure out. On
Friday, in the pro-am, they were fast, but seemed to get slower the last
two days. Just trying to get the ball to the hole, you get anxious and
hit it a few feet by, then miss a few coming back.”
Dugas was paired with professionals Scott Frizzell and
Shane Grinton in the final round. The group ran into difficulty early in
the round. “We all hit provisionals on number three, then I hit one out
of bounds on number four. It looked like a driving range out there for a
while,” joked Dugas, “We all had a good practice session.”
Dugas struggled through the front nine, three putting
seven and eight, and then birdied nine for a one over 35. Birdies on
10.11 and 16 helped get his game back on track and he finished with a
three-under par 33.
This is the fifth consecutive year that the Tour
Championship has been held at Moncton Golf &CC. Host professional Stu
Musgrave won the first three years and Gordie Smith captured the title
last year.
Dugas, who won the Nova Scotia Open earlier this
season, had been fighting an ailing knee most of the summer. “The leg is
finally starting to come around and is feeling stronger. Apart from my
inconsistent driver and a few bad putts today, I was pretty happy with
my game. It was great to win here in Moncton again. It’s been quite a
while.”
