Richard Larwood, PEI Open Champion 2007 receiving trophy from Belvedere head professional Nick Peters (l) and executive professional Stephen Dowling (r)

(Charlottetown, PEI) August 19, 2007 - Richard Larwood of Red Sands Golf Course in Clinton, PEI is the 2007 PEI Open Champion and the fourth individual winner on this year’s CPGA Atlantic Tour.

A former professional in England, Larwood fashioned a three - under par 69 in the rain-shortened event, over the 6,500 yard Belvedere Golf Club layout, in Charlottetown, PEI.
Heavy rain in the opening round resulted in the championship becoming an eighteen-hole event.

John Irwin of Summerside Golf Club in Summerside, PEI was second, with a two-under 70, while Kevin Dugas of Carman Creek, Fredericton, NB was third at 71and Chima McLean of Kings Golf Academy in Toronto, Ontario was fourth at 72.

The PEI Open, the granddaddy of Open events in Atlantic Canada, was contested at the Belvedere Golf Club, Charlottetown, PEI on the 18-19 of August.

“I played as steady as I have all year,” recounted a happy Richard Larwood. “I was pretty steady, hit a lot of greens and only had one bogey, on number ten.”

In playing only his second round at Belvedere, Larwood was extremely pleased with his play. “Our group played the back nine first and with only a few holes to play there was a stoppage in play, because of lightning. The break worked out great for me as I went back out and played my last three holes birdie, birdie, par.”

Larwood commented that the Belvedere layout was similar to courses that he played back in England, so he felt right at home. “ I’m not a long hitter, and you don’t have to be a long hitter to play Belvedere well. It was a nice solid, safe round and I’m really pleased that I played well enough to win.”
