(Stanhope, PEI) August
12, 2007
- Scott Frizzell of the Links at Montague, in Dartmouth, NS held off
late charges by Tim McCullum and Kevin Dugas to capture the Stanhope
Open by one shot.
Frizzell recorded solid rounds of 67-68, for a
nine-under par 135 total, over the 6,600 yard, par 72, Stanhope Golf &
CC seaside layout in Stanhope, PEI.
The annual event, sponsored by Tim Horton's, was
played 11-12 August.
McCullum, of the Lynx at Kingswood, and Dugas, of
Carman Creek, tied for second,
both firing rounds of 67-69=136. Troy Howe of Fox Creek was 139 and John
Irwin of Summerside was 140.
In recording his first CPGA Atlantic Tour victory,
Frizzell remarked, “I hit it really well in the opening round, birdied
the holes that I should have and finished with an eagle. I was really
feeding off Kevin, who I played with both days. My plan on Saturday was
to play with him on Sunday, as I figured he wouldn’t be far from the
lead. I’ve been hitting the ball well all year and I didn’t really make
any real mistakes yesterday or today.”
Frizzell played three years of junior golf at Stanhope
and has first hand knowledge of the course and the spots to avoid, as
well as the places where you can miss your shot and still be alright.
At the turn of the final round Dugas was two up on
Frizzell and McCullum, but a string of birdies by Frizzell on holes
12,13,15 and 17 changed the leader board. “On fifteen, I missed the
green short, but made birdie from ten feet off the fringe to go two up,
after Kevin bogeyed.”
A birdie by McCullum on sixteen and by Dugas on
eighteen tightened things up, but Frizzell was not to be denied. He
knocked in a four footer on the final green for a one shot victory.
“It’s great feeling,” said Frizzell. “It’s been a long
time coming.”
