(Halifax, NS) July 17, 2008
- Kevin Dugas, of the Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS, won his
fourteenth Canadian PGA Atlantic Zone Championship with a four stroke
victory over a field of 43 professionals at New Ashburn Golf Club on
16-17 July.
With rounds of 69-71=140, Dugas was four shots under
par for two trips around the 6,600 yard, par 72 Windsor Junction, NS
layout.
“Fourteen times - it’s really hard to believe, with
the talented players that we have in our zone. The time really flies -
it doesn’t seem that long ago when I won in 1985, for the first time.”
Steven Toombs, of Mactaquac Provincial Park GC in
Mactaquac, NB was runner up at 72-72=144.
Tied for third at 146 were Stu Musgrave of Moncton
Golf & CC, Moncton, NB (72-74) and Troy Howe of Fox Creek, Dieppe, NB
(74-72)
Adam Chamberlain of Gowan Brae, Bathurst, NB was fifth
at 74-73=147.
Dugas credited his tee shots and second shot accuracy
for his success in the championship.
“I guess you’ve got to hit it straight and I hit a lot
of greens in regulation. The side hill putts on the slick greens were
tricky, but I managed a lot of tap in pars.”
In the final round, birdies at 1, 2 and 10 increased
his lead until making his only bogeys of the championship at 14 and 15.
“The course was tough, but in great shape, and was fun
to play. I really enjoyed it.”
Qualifying for the four Atlantic spots at the Canadian
Club Professionals’ Championship at Port St. Lucie, Florida in November
