(Stanhope, PEI) August
10, 2008
- Amateur Jeff MacEachern of Belvedere Golf & CC, Charlottetown, PEI was
the winner of the Stanhope Open, played 9-10 August at Stanhope Golf
&CC, Stanhope, PEI. MacEachern fashioned rounds of 68 and 70 for a six
under par total of 138, over the 6,600 yard, par 72, seaside layout.
Low professional was Sean Joyce, who won a play-off on the first extra
hole with Kevin Dugas. Joyce, of the Canadian Golf Academy, Stratford,
PEI had a 69-71 total of 140, four under par. Dugas, of the Links at
Montague, Dartmouth, NS, had the same total, on rounds of 71 -69.
“ To be honest, its hard for me to take it all in right now,” recounted
an elated Joyce, after the play-off. “ I was really pleased with my play
this weekend and was able to put two good rounds together. My father
caddied for me today and that helped a lot.”
In the playoff, on the 471 yard, par five, first hole, Joyce hit his
third shot, from a greenside bunker to within five feet, and rolled it
in for birdie to seal first place in the professional division.
“ Today I was three under on the front nine, but bogeys on 10,12,13,14
got me feeling shaky with the putter. Luckily I recovered with birdies
on 15 and 17 and a solid par on the final hole to get into the playoff.”
Tied for third among the professionals, with three under par efforts of
141, were Pat DeCoste of the Links at Penn Hills, Shubenacadie, NS;
Scott Frizzell, of the Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS; Nick Peters of
Belvedere Golf & CC, Charlottetown, PEI; and Craig Taylor of Green
Gables, Cavendish, PEI.
