(Truro, NS) August 18, 2009
- Kevin Dugas closed with an even par, final round 71 to overcome a
three shot deficit and win the CPGA Atlantic Assistant Professionals’
Championship, sponsored by Fletcher Leisure Group.
Dugas, of the Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS, had an
opening day 74, and totalled 145 for a winning margin of four strokes at
the annual event, played at Truro Golf Club.
First round leader Sean Joyce, of the Canadian Golf
Academy, and Mike Archibald, of Amherst Golf Club, tied for second at
149. Joyce had rounds of 71-78 and Archibald recorded 77-72.
Justin Dawson of Green Gables was fourth at 150. Steve
LeBlanc of Westfield Golf & CC and Jason Stagg of the Canadian Golf
Academy tied for fifth at 154.
Twenty-nine Atlantic professionals contested the
annual championship at the 6,300 yard, par 71, well conditioned Truro,
NS layout on 17-18 August.
On the opening hole of the second round, Joyce got
into trouble, Dugas made birdie and took the lead. At the turn Dugas
lead by six, but a late rally by Joyce, reduced the margin to two shots,
after 17 holes. A long well positioned drive by Dugas on the 384 yard,
par 4, finishing hole left him with a short approach shot which he holed
for eagle two and a four shot victory.
“I felt that I hit it really good the past couple of
days,” reported Dugas. “I was just very uncomfortable on the greens. I
didn’t feel that I stroked it badly, I just couldn’t seem to read the 5
to 6 footers - hitting most of them through the break.”
Dugas won a provincial amateur championship at the
Truro Golf Club, in the mid 1980’s, then also worked at the club as an
assistant professional.
“It’s a good track – I like it. The trees are taller
and the fairways narrower than when I worked here, but luckily I’m still
hitting my driver pretty straight.”
Dugas is no stranger to the Assistants’ Championship,
having won the Atlantic Championship on many occasions, and winning the
Canadian PGA Assistant Professionals’ Championship in 1987 and 1991.
The top four finishers in this event are eligible to
compete as the Atlantic Zone team at the CPGA Assistant Professionals’
Championship to be held at Golf de la Faune, Quebec City on 21-23
September.
