(Oakfield,NS) July 16, 2009
- Trevor Giggey, of Fox Meadow, Stratford, PEI, captured the Titleist
FootJoy CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship at Oakfield Golf & CC, on 15-16
July.
Giggey, with rounds of 69-73 for a 142 total, was two
shots clear of the field of 49 CPGA Atlantic professionals who contested
the event, over the well conditioned and challenging 6,700 yard, par 72,
Oakfield, NS layout.
Richard Larwood of Red Sands Golf Club, Kensington,
PEI was runner-up with a 144 total on rounds of 71-73.
In third place with a 145 total was Troy Howe of
Moncton Golf & CC, Riverview, NB., with rounds of 74-71.
Tied for fourth, at 146, were Justin Dawson, Green
Gables, Cavendish, PEI and Kevin Dugas, Links at Montague, Dartmouth,
NS.
Giggey’s opening round included birdies on holes
7,8,13 and 14 and a single bogey on the par 3, 15th. On the second day,
birdies on 6,8,15 and 17 were offset with bogies on 1,3,10,11 and 18.
“Overall I’m happy with the way I played. Yesterday my
putter was going really well and got me a couple of birdies that I
wasn’t expecting. Today, I kept the ball in play and the wedges were
good.”
Although Oakfield can reward a long hitter, Giggey
credits accuracy just as much.
“It definitely helps if you’re hitting wedges into
greens, but, as open as this course appears, you don’t have to stray too
far off line to get in trouble.”
Capturing this championship was Giggey’s first victory
on the CPGA Atlantic Tour.
“I’m pretty excited about winning this, it feels
really good and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”
The Atlantic Zone Championship serves as the
qualifying venue for four Atlantic spots at the Canadian Club
Professionals Championship, in Port St. Lucie, Florida in November. The
successful qualifiers are Trevor Giggey, Richard Larwood, Troy Howe and
Alex Jewers.
