(Dartmouth, NS) August 31, 2009
- Mike Machel burned up the back nine, with three birdies and an eagle
to post a four point victory at the Callaway Cup event played at
Brightwood on August 31.
Machel, a teaching professional with Awareness Golf in
Halifax, NS, recorded a total of 20 points in the modified Stableford
competition, which attracted 28 Canadian PGA Atlantic golf professionals
to compete at the 5,600 yard, par 68, Dartmouth, NS. layout.
Tied for second spot, with 16 points, were John Irwin
of Mischouche, PEI; Kevin Dugas of The Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS;
and Andrew Isenor of Golf Town, Dartmouth, NS.
Machel was thrilled with the win and the way that he
played. He had only four points on the front nine, but his sixteen
points on the back nine carried the day.
“That’s the lowest that I’ve ever shot,” he said,
referring to his back nine score of 29. “I’m really pleased, it was a
great day.”
The modified Stableford system awards 10 points for
double eagle, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, 1 for par, 0 for bogey or
higher.
Tied in fifth spot with 15 points were Greg Sutherland
of Truro Golf Club, Truro, NS; Jeff Wood of Lakeside Golf Club, Moncton,
NB; Scott Frizzell of The Links at Montague, Dartmouth, NS; and Alex
Jewers of Lost Creek, Beaverbank, NS.
