(Antigonish, NS) October 18, 2009
- A birdie by team captain Trevor Giggey, on the final hole, in the
final match of the day, lifted the Young Guns to victory in the 8th
Annual CPGA Atlantic Elders’ Cup, contested 17-18 October at Antigonish
Golf & CC.
In the final match Giggey was one down to Greg
Sutherland, of the Old Guys, coming to the eighteenth hole. A win by
Sutherland and the matches would have been all square, at 14 points
each, and the defending Old Guys would have retained the cup; but,
Giggey’s second shot to within five feet and resulting birdie changed
all that. Their match ended all square and the Young Guns once again had
the cup, with a final winning tally of 14 ½ to 13 ½.
It was fitting that the winning stroke was made by
Giggey, the current Zone Champion and Tour Champion and top player on
the CPGA Atlantic Tour this past season.
The modified Ryder Cup team competition pitted 14 CPGA
Atlantic professionals, 34 years and younger (Young Guns) against 14 of
their fellow professionals who are 35 years and older (Old Guys). The
selection of teams was based on individual point accumulation from the
eight events of the CPGA Atlantic Tour. This year the team captains were
John Irwin and Trevor Giggey.
The Young Guns were victorious in the first five
contests and the Old Guys in the past two years.
The first day of competition featured team best ball
matches in the morning, followed by team alternate shot in the
afternoon. The final day featured 18-hole singles matches.
The CPGA Atlantic Tour season ending finale was hosted
for the eighth time at the well conditioned and challenging 6,600 yard,
par 72 Antigonish, NS layout.
