(Stanhope, PEI) August 9, 2009
- Amateur Chris Welton, from Belvedere, won the Stanhope Open, presented
by Fletcher Leisure Group on August 9, with a blistering two day total
of eleven under par. His rounds of 68 – 65 totalled 133 for two trips
around the 6,600 yard, par 72, Stanhope Golf & CC, seaside layout.
Gordie Smith, from Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, NS,
shot 69-68 = 137 to finish as the top professional. Tim McCullum, from
Fredericton Golf Club in Fredericton, NB, was second in the pro division
with 69-69=138. Professionals tied for third at 140 were John Irwin from
Miscouche, PEI and Kevin Dugas from Links at Montague.
“I came over for a vacation with my family and my
young fella caddied for me today,” beamed a happy Gordie Smith, as ten
year old Michael carried his bag. “It’s been a great weekend, I love it
over here. I felt very relaxed and it showed in my game.”
“Yesterday was very windy, but I hit it pretty good,
so I had a good feeling coming into today and everything worked out
really well. I think that I struck the ball a little better yesterday –
only had trouble on number 4, where I made bogey.”
In the closing round, on Sunday, Smith had five
birdies and one bogey.
“Today I was pretty steady, except for an errant tee
shot on number 7, that ended in a bogey, but all in all , it was pretty
solid. It was just a thrill to have my oldest boy on the bag.”
