Miramichi Golf & Country Club
possibly the most challenging 18-hole layout in the northeast

Miramichi Golf & Country Club was established in 1925 at Bushville, New Brunswick on the south bank of the Miramichi River. The course started out as a 9-hole facility and gradually changed to 18-holes by 1983. Since then, several changes have been made, the latest of which was the rebuilding of holes 4, 5 and 6 in 2000. These three new holes offer a challenge to every golfer. The T. F. Robinson design is relatively tight and most holes require an accurate tee shot. Failure to stay on the fairway may result in a recovery shot from the trees. Among private clubs, it stands as possibly the most challenging 18-hole layout in the northeast. The narrow fairways, sand and water, all come into play and challenge the player to a true test of golfing skills where a premium is put on shot placement. The course is fairly flat and is most enjoyable to walk. Scenery and wildlife make for an enjoyable day.

The pride of Miramichi Golf & Country Club is it’s clubhouse, which was erected in 1825, and survived the famed Miramichi Fire of the same year. The old stone building is described as being unique among golf clubs in this country. It was once the private home of Thomas H. Peters, a United Empire Loyalist, then believed to be the wealthiest man on the Miramichi River. Indeed, Bushville was a perfect location for the building, being conveniently situated between the twin towns of Newcastle and Chatham, now known as Miramichi City. Nearby, the Bushville wharf accommodated riverboat passengers, while sailing vessels silently breezed past the mansion to the ports of Newcastle and Nelson, in glowing river sunsets, that would have added a touch of romance to the setting.
The golf club was organized in 1925, when Senator G.P. Burchill, a charter member, sold the properties to the club.

Today, the stone mansion stands unchanged since its construction in 1825, except for a major addition, to the south side in 1984.
