Dugas Captures His Tenth CPGA Atlantic Championship

Kevin Dugas, CPGA Atlantic Champion (center) with Stanhope professional Shannon Grinton and manager Rena MacLeod

(August 11, 2002) Kevin Dugas of Country Meadows coolly rolled in a 12 foot birdie put on the final hole at Stanhope Golf & CC to win the Canadian PGA Atlantic Zone Championship by two strokes. The Moncton area professional, who has now won this championship ten times, fashioned rounds of 65-72 for a 137 total, seven under par for two trips around the 6,600 yard, par 72 layout.

The annual championship for CPGA Atlantic professionals, sponsored by Wilson Sorts, was held in conjunction with the Tim Horton's Stanhope Open on 9-10-11 August.

Runner-up Stu Musgrave of Lingan made it close with one hole to go. Playing in the second last group, the Sydney, NS professional holed an eagle three putt on the par 5, 515 yard, 17th hole to get within one stroke of the lead. He finished the championship with a 70-69=139 total.

Dugas was unable to birdie 17, after being in front of the green in two. His putt hit the hole and spun out. On the 375 yard, downhill finishing hole, the Country Meadows professional hit his tee shot within inches of rolling into a green side bunker, leaving a tricky shot from a difficult stance, however he made a great pitch shot that set up his closing birdie.

Troy Howe of Magnetic Hill in Moncton, NB was third with rounds of 68-76=144.

Next was Richard Dumeah of Osprey Ridge, Bridgewater, NS was also low senior professional, following rounds of 67-78=145. Also at 145 was Gordie Smith of Oakfield Country Club, Grand Lake, NS.

John Fortier of Belvedere, Charlottetown, PEI was low amateur with rounds of 70-72 =142. Kevin Crozier of the host club was amateur runner-up at 70-75=145

Stanhope Golf & Country Club, in the heart of PEI's beach district, was in excellent condition, with near perfect weather all weekend. The absent wind of Friday and Saturday kicked up Sunday and Stanhope showed it's teeth, especially the difficult 171 yard, par-3, thirteenth hole where many competitors found water. The Stanhope Open is always a very poular annual event and this year attracted a field of 170 players including 54 CPGA Atlantic Zone professionals.

Prior to the championship, a pro-am was held on Friday 9 August. The winners were Team RSAPC with professionals Stu Musgrave of Lingan Country Club, Sydney, NS and Chad Pearson of Chester Golf Club, Chester, NS. Runner-up was Team Spalding Canada with professionals Chris Billings from the Lynx at Kingswood, Fredericton, NB and Gerry Elliott of Ken-Wo Country Club, New Minas, NS.

Low individual professionals in the pro-am were Stu Musgrave of Lingan with 65 and Brent McKay, professional Grand Falls Golf Club, Grand Falls, NB who shot 69.

The CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship - Stanhope Open is the fourth event on the 2002 Maritime Pro-Am Tour. The next event is the 26th Annual Amherst Open to be held 27-28-29 August at Amherst Golf Club, Amherst, NS. Major corporate sponsors include Coors Light, Wilson Sports, Jazz Golf, Callaway, American Express, Spalding Canada, Turf Care Products, Tournament Sports, Universal Signs and Graphics, Print Atlantic, Elite Golf, Titleist, and Aureus\Adams Golf.
