Elders Cup to
be Contested at Antigonish
Maritime
Pro-Am Tour finale
The first annual
Elders Cup will be held at
Antigonish Golf & CC on 11-12-13 October. The team competition will pit twelve
CPGA Atlantic professionals, 34 years and younger (Young Guns) against twelve of
their fellow professionals who are 35 years and older (Experience & Wisdom). The
selection of teams was based on individual point accumulation from the first six
events of the Maritime Pro-Am Tour.
Brent McKay, captain of the ‘Young Guns’
is hoping to continue the momentum his charges have mounted during the final
Tour events.
“We’re expecting Stu ( Musgrave ) will
continue the strong play he has maintained all season,” advised McKay, “ and
Jason Snow, Chris Irwin and Kyle Maguire always put in a strong performance.
We’ll give the guys on the ‘Experience & Wisdom’ team all they can handle.”
Musgrave captured the Tour Championship
in mid September and four of the ‘Young Guns’ finished in the top five. Musgrave
was also the overall point’s leader on the entire Tour. Amherst Open champion,
Jason Snow, is also the reigning Atlantic Assistant Pro Champion.
“The ‘Young Guns’ are overflowing with
confidence now, but may be singing a different tune after we get them on the
course at Antigonish,” countered Scott Hatchard, who is captain of ‘Experience &
Wisdom.’ “As our team name implies, we have a lot of depth, featuring such
accomplished and well-known players as Kevin Dugas, Gordie Smith and Dave Bowlan,
who have been in the winner’s circle too many times to count.”
Dugas captured his
10th Atlantic Zone Championship this past summer at Stanhope along
with top professional honours in the Maritime Masters, PEI Open, Moncton Open,
and Car Guys Classic. Dave Bowlan recently was low professional in the Parrsboro
Open.
“We’re excited to be hosting this
event,” remarked Antigonish professional Ed Ryan. “Our course offers a keen
challenge and the match play format will provide for some exciting competition.
It’s difficult to predict a winner. Both teams are strong and appear to be very
confident that they will win. We hope that golfers from throughout the region
will come out to Antigonish to watch the best professionals in Atlantic Canada.”
Practice rounds will be held on Friday
followed by a team banquet and selection for first day pairings. Saturday
morning team matches will feature nine holes of best ball and nine holes of
alternate shot. In the afternoon the teams will compete in a nine-hole scramble.
Following a banquet for the teams in the evening, the pairings for the final day
will be made. Sunday will highlight 18-hole singles matches to complete the
competition.
