Teeing up for a Second Season
Maritime Pro-Am Tour 2002

Pleased with the positive reception in their first year of operation, the Maritime Pro-Am Tour recently announced its schedule for 2002.

“We’ve had tremendous support from our corporate sponsors and our partners in the Atlantic region’s golf industry,” reported Scott Hatchard, tournament captain.

“We’re very appreciative of their continued contributions and look forward to working with them throughout the tour.”

Major corporate sponsors include Coors Light, Wilson Sports, Jazz Golf, Callaway, American Express, Spalding Canada, Turf Care Products, Tournament Sports, Universal Signs and Graphics, Print Atlantic, Elite Golf, Titleist, and Aureus\Adams Golf

The tour’s focus will continue to bring the expanding golf industry of Atlantic Canada in touch with the corporate and business sectors of the region, through elite competition and interaction.

“It’s is a wonderful opportunity for co-operative promotion and affinity between all the tour partners,” remarked Hatchard. “Publicity gained from the events will also focus attention on golf tourism and charities in the region. Our ultimate goal is to benefit the interests of everyone who is involved with the Tour.”

“The pro-ams, that precede each event, have been the greatest thing about the tour,” observes Kevin Dugas, winner of last seasons Stanhope Open and Tour Championship. “It’s a fun atmosphere participating with the tour sponsors and local club members. The tour has also put more focus on the playing abilities of the professionals, and with the larger purses, the caliber of competition is much higher.”

New Brunswick Open

Wilson Sports  \ Tim Horton’s CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship
Friday, Saturday and Sunday   9-11 August
Stanhope Golf Club, Stanhope, PEI

Wilson Sports is the presenting sponsor of the Atlantic Zone Championship, which will be held in conjunction with the Stanhope Open. Hosting this summer classic is the Stanhope Golf & Country Club, a 6,600-yard, par 72 course, located in the heart of the PEI’s  “beach district.”

Kevin Dugas, runner-up in last year’s Atlantic Zone Championship, at Sussex, likes “the island” layout. He has performed well here in the past, including winning last year’s Stanhope Open.

“The greens and the pin positions really dictate the difficulty at Stanhope. The cloverleaf shaped greens and mounding can cause you great difficulty, especially when the pins are tucked in behind the mounds,” explains Dugas. “Position is everything when you play there. I hope the wind is up, as it usually is, just to see what the guys will shoot. It’s a good test of golf.”

Elder’s Cup
Saturday and Sunday   13 & 13 October
Antigonish Golf & CC, Antigonish, N.S.

A Ryder-Cup style team event is planned to wrap up the year, pitting a team of professionals 35 years and older against a team of professionals under 35. Teams will be decided on overall point standings. Will this start a rivalry ?…..of course !!

The tour also promotes the everyday skills of the Canadian PGA professional, as well as their playing abilities.

“In addition to showcasing the competitive side of the Atlantic golf professional, the tour provides a vehicle to publicize and enhance the image of each professional, their club where they work and our Association,” outlines Hatchard.

“ We will promote the management, teaching and administrative skills and the many other duties they perform everyday. Golfers who are members at a club employing a CPGA professional are very fortunate. The club professional, with their vast knowledge of the golf industry, is the acknowledged expert at the club. If you’re looking for advise on your game or equipment or golf in general, you should talk to your CPGA professional soon……we’re good for your game.”
