“It’s is a wonderful opportunity for co-operative promotion and loyal partnership between all the tour partners,” remarked Hatchard. “Publicity gained from the events will also focus attention on golf tourism and charities in the region. Our ultimate goal is to benefit the interests of everyone who is involved with the Tour.” “The pro-ams, that precede each event, have been the greatest thing about the tour,” observes Kevin Dugas, winner of last season’s Stanhope Open and CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship. “It’s a fun atmosphere participating with the tour sponsors and local club members. The tour has also put more focus on the playing abilities of the professionals, and with the larger purses, the caliber of competition is much higher.” This year will see the Tour Championship move to the Moncton Golf & CC in Riverview, NB. Last year’s champion, Stu Musgrave, is really pleased that Moncton will host the event. “I think it’s awesome that the Tour Championship is going to Moncton,” commented Musgrave, the head pro at Sydney’s Lingan Country Club, “I’ve had very good success there.” Musgrave, a former Moncton Open champ, believes he has the tools for success again at the hub-city layout. “ I can reach the long par threes with irons, and my driver is usually accurate, so I feel pretty confident about my chances.”
The Events:
Seks Drive Triple Six Championship The opening event on the Maritime Pro-Am Tour features an innovative format. Two-player teams in the Seks Drive Triple Six Championship will be challenged with six holes of “Alternate Shot”, six holes of “Scramble” and six holes of “Best Ball”. The format of play will rotate each round. Hampton is a 6,300 yard, par 72 course, including one of the longest holes in North America, the famous 689-yard, par 6, number six. Defending champions are host professional Duncan Mayberry and his assistant Jason Snow.
New Brunswick Open
Sussex Golf & CC, Sussex, N.B. The challenging Sussex layout will provide all the competitors with a demanding test of golf. At 6,650 yards, par 72, the rolling layout, featuring steep inclines, valleys, streams and elevated greens will challenge the use of every club in the bag. Overall winner last year was amateur Dan Coulombe of Fredericton, while Stu Musgrave was low professional.
Jazz Golf presents
CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8-10 August Stanhope Golf Club, Stanhope, PEI Jazz Golf is the presenting sponsor of the Atlantic Zone Championship, which will be held in conjunction with the Tim Horton’s Stanhope Open. Hosting this summer classic is the Stanhope Golf & Country Club, a 6,600-yard, par 72 course, located in the heart of PEI’s “beach district.” Kevin Dugas won his tenth CPGA Atlantic Zone Championship in 2002. “The greens and the pin positions really dictate the difficulty at Stanhope. The cloverleaf shaped greens and mounding can cause you great difficulty, especially when the pins are tucked in behind the mounds,” explains Dugas. “Position is everything when you play there. I hope the wind is up, as it usually is, just to see what the guys will shoot. It’s a good test of golf.”
Shopper’s Drug Mart Amherst Open Monday thru Thursday 25-28 AugustAmherst Golf Club, Amherst, N.S.The Shopper’s Drug Mart Amherst Open has been a traditional event for pros and amateurs for 26 years. Amherst Golf Club, at 6350 yards, par 71, is an older course with lots of character. There is a wonderful variety of holes, rolling through the woods and out in the open where, depending on the day, you feel at the mercy of the Tantramar winds. Jason Snow, assistant professional from Hampton Golf & CC, won here last year.
Wilson Sports presents Ganong
Maritime Tour Championship Presented by Wilson Sports, the Ganong Maritime Tour Championship will draw an exceptional field to the Moncton Golf Club, as several professionals will have qualified for an additional Tour Championship purse. Stu Musgrave won the event last year when it was held at Covered Bridge in Hartland, NB. He’s looking forward to defending his title at the challenging 6,250-yard, par 70, layout that was home to the popular Moncton Open for over forty years.
Elder’s Cup The Ryder-Cup style team event will wrap up the year, pitting a team of professionals 35 years and older against a team of professionals 34 years and younger. Teams will be decided on overall point standings in the preceding five events. Last year the “Young Guns”, captained by Grand Falls professional, Brent McKay, prevailed over “Wisdom and Experience”, as the younger professionals captured the inaugural event 16 ˝ to 13 ˝.
Hatchard points out that the tour also promotes the everyday skills of the Canadian PGA professional, as well as their playing abilities. “In addition to showcasing the competitive side of the Atlantic golf professional, the tour provides a vehicle to publicize and enhance the image of each professional, the club where they work and our Association. We will promote the management, teaching and administrative skills and the many other duties they perform everyday. Golfers who are members at a club employing a CPGA professional are very fortunate. The club professional, with their vast knowledge of the golf industry, is the acknowledged expert at the club. If you’re looking for advise on your game, equipment or golf in general, you should talk to your CPGA professional soon……we’re good for your game.”
